I haven’t ever taken a stand on anything on this blog.  Well, except for my love mustard, large necklaces, red shoes,  and distaste for weird clothing.  But this makes me want to take a stand.  This. Is. Disturbing.  And wrong.  These are American Apparel’s new ads.  Read more about it here.

I think most of the time AA ads want to be provocative, but this really does border on pornographic. They’re even more unsettling because of the youth portrayed by the girls in the drawings. It’s not OK.

And the thing is, their attempt at being “provocative” is truly PATHETIC. They’ve been “on the [financial] rocks” for quite some time and this just strikes me as some last-ditch attempt at drawing attention to themselves. Pretty sick…I will not purchase anything there again, and will encourage my friends to boycott them as well. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

  3. Yikes! I know American Apparel has been on this route for quite some time, but it’s becomes even more disturbing as the years roll by. They really know how to push people’s buttons!

Everything about AA is skeevy, from their founder to their gold lame pants. I refuse to buy AA or set foot in their stores. These ads are really irresponsible.

  5. I’m shocked! I’ve never seen anything like that in Europe!!!

Very well done for making a moral stand on this subject.
I live in England and “American Apparel” doesn’t have a market over here but it is a sad reflection when long established companies have to use tacky sexy drawings which leave little to the imagination to market their products, and like you I feel that enough is enough.

  7. Gross! There is no level of depravity that Dov Charney will not sink to to get some publicity. AA has been having a lot of financial trouble (undocumented workers that are working in sweatshops, harassment suits, tax evasion, etc) so I can only hope that these drawings of extremely young girls will be the nail in the coffin.

  8. AA is creepy and I think they should be boycotted. Enough with the Lolita stuff.

Wrong, irresponsible, tacky, and gross. Have bought socks from them about 3 years ago but won’t purchase anything from them ever again.
